webmaster login the amateur rose breeders association ​ ​ ​ established 1975  welcome to the wonderful world of rose breeding ​ the objects of the society are to; protect the interests raise the status & knowledge and skills of the amateur rose breeder outdoor+photo love's spell d dscf2814 rambling rosie 018.jpg lightning strike 020.jpg blue for you b.jpg img_3528.jpg 015.jpg 019.jpg outdoor+photo love's spell d dscf2814 rambling rosie 018.jpg lightning strike 020.jpg blue for you b.jpg img_3528.jpg 015.jpg 019.jpg 2017 a year in the life of a rose-breeder january. this is the month to relax and dream of a successful year ahead. the seeds that were harvested last november from the summer crossings were sewn in seed trays after christmas and placed in a cold greenhouse. depending on the temperature over winter, it will take some eight weeks before germination starts. the roses that i intend to use in this year's breeding programme have been potted and are stored outside until the end of march. they will then be put into a cold greenhouse. the weather has been kind this month so i have been able to prepare the ground where i will plant this years root stock. my soil is heavy so last year it was used for potatoes and compost has now been added. rose of the month 'golden future' ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ this rose was raised by one of our past chairmen, colin horner. it is a climber with excellent resistance to disease. it has been used by most breeders, both amateur and professional to bring disease resistance into modern hybrids. i include it in my breeding programme together with several of its healthy seedlings. ​ february this is the month to concentrate on dealing with rose stock. in the first week of february i headed-back my briars that i budded last year to just above the budding eye that had been inserted. already there was evidence with some of them that growth was about to begin. however it will be the end of march before i shall know how many have taken. i will be happy with 80% take. in the middle of the month i began to plant the rose stock (150) that i will be budding this summer. the temperature this month has been unusually high and as a result my seedlings in the greenhouse have started to germinate. this is 3 to 4 weeks earlier than normal. ​ rose of the month eyes for you ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ this rose was bred by one of our members, peter james, breeding with the persian rose hulthemia persica to give the distinctive eye of the persian rose. it is the fore-runner of many roses of this nature recently introduced onto the market . ​ march weather-wise, this month proved to be most gentle. frost and high winds were barely existent and as a result my seedlings started to germinate three weeks earlier than normal. march is an exiting month for the breeder. shoots are starting to form on the briars that were cut back last month and in the greenhouse a high rate of germination of seeds is anticipated and it is time to dream of that perfect rose ahead. by the end of the month nearly 50% of my seeds had germinated and within five days of germination, they were potted into 4.25 inch pots. these will be kept in the greenhouse until they flower. each pot is referenced so that records can be kept of parentage. ​ rose of the month newsflash ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ this rose was raised by our editor, david kenny, in ireland. in 2012 it won the president's award in the international rose trials of the royal national rose society. ​ april a t the beginning of this month all the roses that were potted up during the winter, for use in breeding, were placed in the greenhouse. the roses selected were a mixture of varieties that i had used previously and that had given me seedlings of good quality with regard to disease resistance, vigour and beauty of flower; a few commercially available varieties that possessed a quality that i wanted to introduce into my breeding, particularly fragrance; and some of my recent varieties that i regarded highly. in total, about 75% were my own varieties. last year's budded roses that had been cut back in february were showing growth and by the end of the month many had 3 to 6 inches of growth. however, april was a very dry month; much too dry for the formation of lush summer growth. my 700th seedling appeared on the last day of the month, giving me an excellent germination rate of about 60%. i just hope that there is one amongst them that is worthy of all my efforts. time will tell. ​ rose of the month blue for you ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ since the blue gene is missing from the rose, there is no such flower as a blue rose. this rose was bred by peter james and the colour is as near to blue as is possible. the rose is ideal for the front of a border. ​ may germination of seed was completed this month, giving a very good germination for the season of over 60%. the first seedlings are showing good growth and many are in bud with some about to flower. this year's pollination began before the middle of the month and by the end of the month 89 flowers were cross pollinated, compared to only 20 last year. this is explained by the difference in the spring temperatures. this year, many days have been hot and sunny and the roses were showing signs of stress, including the newly planted rootstock. however the roses in the garden have responded well to spells of rain in the last few days and a lovely early-summer display is promised. ​ rose of the month lightning strike this rose was raised by one of our members, ronnie rawlins. this is one of the very few roses on the market with a white uniform stripe situated in the centre of every red petal and is the result of many years of dedicated breeding. ​ june every day new seedlings are flowering and the best roses are selected for saving. only the best (10-15%) are kept and judging is on beauty of flower and beauty of foliage. the ones that are selected for keeping are removed from their pots after flowering and planted in a prepared bed about 9 ins apart. providing that the bed is well watered, they will happily grow. these seedlings are then examined over the next two years and the very best are budded onto root stock. ​ rose of the month bucklebury boy ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ this patio rose was bred by myself and was named to celebrate the birth of our future monarch, prince george. on leaving hospital george was cared for in his mother's family home in the village of bucklebury. the village residents lovingly therefore refer to him as their bucklebury boy july this must be the busiest month of the year for the rose breeder. selection of the best seedlings for keeping is carried out every day as they come into flower. the rootstock is also ready to receive budding eyes. this can only be carried out in july and august, so the most promising seedlings from the past two years are budded together with a few of this years. the roses budded last year are in full flower and are judged for health, beauty and vigour of plant, beauty and quantity of flower rain resistance and fragrance. the very best can be offered for naming. the work is demanding, but the enjoyment is great. rose of the month baby love ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ this rose was bred by our member len scrivens. it is a beautiful patio rose with a tremendous disease resistance which was achieved by introducing a disease resistant species rose into the breeding programme and years of perseverance. ​ august the budding was completed by the middle of the month. most of the roses selected for budding came from the crossings i made in 2014. seedlings from 2015 were poor in comparison. by the end of the month all the seedlings from last year's crosses have flowered. approx. 12% have been judged to have potential and these have been planted in a bed in the garden. the rest have been discarded. the heps from the crosses made this year have swollen well. with a take of about 50%. some are starting to ripen. ​ ​ rose of the month peel brow gold ​ this lovely hybr
